Riding with Bharat: How Local is Local Enough? Inside Uber’s Journey to Craft Culturally Fluent and Emotionally Resonant Experiences for India

As India’s digital adoption surges beyond metropolises into the heart of Bharat, the need for truly local, emotionally resonant experiences has never been greater. But in a country with 22 official languages, countless dialects, and everyday code-mixing, “local” isn’t just a language choice, it’s a delicate blend of authenticity, inclusivity, and cultural connection.

In this session, I will share Uber’s journey in navigating India’s vast and complex linguistic landscape, balancing the efficiency of scale with the depth of regional relevance. From hyperlocal strategy and code-mixed user interfaces to leveraging AI for real-time localization, we’ll explore how Uber is navigating through the “One Bharat, Many Bhashas” challenge. Discover how we design for linguistic hybridity where Hinglish, Tanglish, Benglish, and other blends are not exceptions but the norm, and what it truly takes to build trust through language while crafting experiences that resonate with our richly diverse Indian users.
