The inaugural Machine Translation/AI Round Table aims to bring together the localization community who are interested in implementing and opening new frontiers of MT/AI-driven processes in your business, including human resources and other aspects of localization project management. In order to help the participants to better engage in the discussions, LocWorld partners with AMTA (The American Machine Translation Association) to organize a preparation online session before the round table and a follow-up tutorial online session after to fill in the knowledge gaps that the participants will need to explore their MT/AI deployment strategies

    • Modules:
      • Module 1: General MT/AI topics: available commercial MT systems, public APIs, open source, tech stack integrations – known challenges, security issues, compliance, selecting MT providers. More on types of MT
      • Module 2: MT quality evaluation methodologies – human and automated, AI-based approaches
      • Module 3: MT Quality Estimation and its impact on the continuous localization

Lunch break (12:30 pm – 2:00 pm)

Round Table afternoon session: New frontiers in the MT/AI space (innovation in MT/AI data)

    • Time: 2:00 – 5:30 pm, July 11, 2022; 3.5 hours long, including 3 modules (1 hour each) and two breaks (15 minutes each)
    • Format: in-person discussions, use cases, and interactive business game
    • Modules:
      • Module 1: Maximize the human value in an MT/AI-driven localization process: resource management, crowdsourcing, etc.
      • Module 2: Using AI to Develop and Manage Multilingual Datasets to Protect People and Brands
      • Module 3: AI-driven Global Content Transformation and Creation

 

Round Table technical information sessions (co-organized with AMTA)

Online pre-roundtable session

  • Time: July 6, 2022; 1.5 hours long, including Q&A
  • Format: online
  • Presenter: Jay Marciano
  • Content: Prepare the working definitions of some terms and associated specialized knowledge that will be involved in the roundtable discussion; go through the agenda; give the participants a sense of right or wrong in terms of MT/AI knowledge most relevant to the roundtable discussion

Online follow up session

  • Time: July 20, 2022; 1 hour long, including Q&A
  • Format: online
  • Presenter: Jay Marciano
  • Content: Based on the inputs at the roundtable on July 11, a customized tutorial will be provided to fill up the knowledge gap and compare notes

About Your Moderator

Dr. Peng Wang

Dr. Peng Wang has taught, researched and practiced translation and localization on three continents. She is the convener for EDUinLOC, the chair of the automation/AI track for LocWorld conferences and a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa. Previously, she was the CAT Tools Coordinator at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Wang has rich research experience on NLP AI, having worked as a linguistic researcher at the Corpus Research Lab at Northern Arizona University, a domain expert for data mining projects at the University of Maryland and an honorary research fellow on automatic discourse analysis tools at the University of Liverpool. Her current research and practice focus on human learning vs. machine learning, machine translation, terminology and multilingual corpus analysis.

Dr. Wang has published about 30 articles and two books. She is an expert in approaching technology in the context of culture and humanities. She embraces linguistic and cultural diversity in her classrooms, with students aged from 18 to over 70, in over 10 language combinations, coming from UAE, China, Italy, Spain, Germany, Morocco, Colombia, Mexico, and Haiti, to name just a few.
