Each seminar will be offered both at 8:00am Central and 11:00am Central.

Each of these sessions can be taken individually. We require however that you be familiar with the basics before you take the more advanced sessions. For details please see the chart below.

Overview


XML in TagEditor

Presenter: Angelika Zerfass

Target Audience

Project managers and translators who have to handle XML files from different sources (Software, Content Management Systems, Authoring Systems...)

Synopsis

Before an XML file can be translated in TagEditor, a settings file has to be created so that TagEditor can display text and tags correctly. The creation and modification of this settings file depends very much on the type of XML file you have.

  • Preparing TagEditor for translation of XML files (INI settings file)
  • Adjusting the settings file
  • How to handle conditional XML
  • How to handle HTML within XML
  • Troubleshooting common error messages after XML translation

Workbench Settings

Translation project managers who set up translation memories for their translators.

Synopsis

After working with SDL Trados Translator's Workbench for some time, you will probably wonder about some of the settings in the TM setup and the Translation Memory Options.

This session will explain the settings, what they do and when they could be useful. Sample files will show the results of using the settings.

Agenda

We will discuss the following settings and how they can be used/what the results of the options are:

  • Adding information (text and attribute fields) to segment pairs
    • Field settings during interactive translation, import, cleanup
  • Translation Memory Options
    • Individual settings during translation and batch functions
  • Translation Memory Setup
    • TM specific settings

Terminology Management with SDL Trados MultiTerm

Presenter: Angelika Zerfass

  • Translators who want to set up their own term base in MultiTerm.
  • Project managers who want to learn what a term base for a customer/translator should look like.

Synopsis

Working with SDL Trados Translator's Workbench to save and reuse whole sentences is only one part of the translation process. Dictionaries, glossaries, or term bases are also a very fundamental part of translation. SDL MultiTerm offers an automatic lookup during translation with Workbench. In order to be able to work with MultiTerm term recognition, you will have to set up your very own term base and fill it with the company and subject matter specific terminology of your area of expertise.

  • Database setup considerations (decisions during the setup of a new term base).
  • Setup and conversion of an Excel file for import into a MultiTerm database.
  • Import options.
  • Using a term base during translation.

DTP file formats

Presenter: Angelika Zerfass

Everybody who has to prepare DTP file formats for translation (translation project managers, DTP specialists, technical authors - as most of the preparations steps have to be done within the DTP tools)

Synopsis

Different desktop publishing file formats require different preparation. The presentation will show the workflow for inDesign (from CS2 onward), FrameMaker and QuarkXPress and what to look out for in TagEditor, when translating these file formats.

  • General information on file preparation in DTP tools.
  • Preparation of InDesign files/troubleshooting in TagEditor.
  • Conversion of FrameMaker files.
  • Extraction of QuarkXPress text.

Checking features in TagEditor

  • Quality assurance department.
  • Project managers who want to do spot-checks on translated files.

Synopsis

For every file format that can be translated in TagEditor, there are also verification utilities that help to improve the translation. Terminology verification can check the terminology used in a translation against an SDL MultiTerm term base. Tag verification helps to keep the formatting information within the file intact and the quality assurance checks automatically check for things like punctuation, forgotten translation, numbers and so on.

Trados Clinic

Experienced Trados users (translators, project managers) who want to have their own questions answered by our expert.

Synopsis

When working with SDL Trados tools, be it Translator's Workbench, TagEditor, MultiTerm or the utilities around these tools like Clipboard Translator, S-Tagger or Glue, there will certainly be questions about the tool and why they work the way they do. Or you might have had some issues with a certain file format or function where you would like to know what happened and how to avoid errors.

The Trados Clinic can help you to find answers to problems, get background information on certain features or simply enlarge your knowledge of Trados tools and processes.

You send in your questions. We will create the agenda out of the questions andprepare answers, workarounds or test files to show what happens.

Differences Between Trados 2007 and Trados 2009

This session is for translators and project managers who have been working with SDL Trados 2007 already and are planning to move to SDL Trados Studio 2009.

Synopsis

We will look at the new features in Studio 2009, how existing features have been implemented or changed and where to find them.

This session is not an introduction to the translation process with Studio 2009, but rather a comparison to SDL Trados 2007 and how the new software changes the existing settings and processes.



SDL Trados Studio 2009 for Project Managers

Experienced Trados users (translators, project managers) who want to have their own questions answered by our expert.

Synopsis

This session will deal with preliminary considerations when working with Studio 2009 like, general and project specific settings for the handling of different file formats as well as setting up project templates and project packages.

Introduction to Across

Project managers, translators and proofreaders who have to create new projects, import documents, define project settings, and translate or proofread a text.

Synopsis

Before a text can be translated it has to be imported into Across. During project creation in the integrated platform of Across, several settings can be defined including the definition of workflows and processes.

The translation environment crossDesk integrates the translation memory crossTank and the terminology database crossTerm to automatically provide all the necessary information for a successful translation or proofreading process.

crossTerm: Terminology Management in Across

Presenter: Dr. Nicole Keller

Terminologists who are responsible for setting up the terminology database and filling it with new terms. Project managers and translators who want to learn what crossTerm should look like to customers and how they can enter terms.

Synopsis

crossTerm is a type of personal electronic dictionary that enables the translator to create and update multilingual sets of terminology, in particular company-specific terminology and glossaries of technical terms.

The terminology workflow in Across, including term extraction and term translation, offers an easy way to populate your terminology database before the actual translation process.

There are various ways to create new terminology entries for use through the automatic term recognition in crossDesk (translation environment).

Across Alignment Wizard

Project managers and translators who want to import text pairs that have already been translated.

Synopsis

The Alignment Wizard assists you in importing previously translated text pairs. During this process, Across aligns the texts by matching the corresponding segments in the source and target documents and stores the matches in crossTank. If changes are made to the source document, translated segments in the target document can easily be updated with the Update Wizard.
